Flight Options Try 4: Iceland Air

So, we know we can get to Reykjavik pretty cheap on Iceland Air from a US hub. Can we make that work somehow?

Round-trip Boston to Reykjavik, Thursday, August 29 to Friday, September 13 is $605. Looks like it would coat $200 round-trip to Boston on Spirit, $250 on US Air or Southwest. Maybe add a hotel room to that, depending on when our flight is on the 29th.

Round-trip NYC to Reykjavik, Monday, August 26 to Monday, September 9 is $839. Round-trip to NYC is $200 on Spirit, $250 on JetBlue, $300 on a legitimate airline.

Round-trip, Minneapolis to Reykjavik, Wednesday, August 29 to Monday, September 9 is $783. Round trip to Minneapolis is $100 on Spirit. $140 on American.

So, Boston or Minny would be like $850? Although the dates suck for the cheapest Minny fair suck. That's a little cheaper than the round trip to London on United. We do end up adding in another connection. And I'd have to figure out how to get from Iceland to/from Dublin/London.

Flight Options Try 3 - One-Way to/from London/Dublin

Ok, what if we do into London, out of Dublin, or into Dublin, out of London.

One-way Chicago to London on 8/27 is $550 with a layover somewhere. A non-stop is $1400. That seems pretty consistent 8/25 to 8/28. It's the same, if not a little more expensive for the flight home. I looked at 9/10.

One-way Chicago to Dublin on 8/27 is $550 with a layover. A non-stop is $650. That seems pretty consistent 8/25 to 8/28. It's about $650 to get home on 9/10.

Can you use miles for one-way? I believe not.

Can you use miles on Aer Lingus? Are they partners with United?

I only have 17,000 miles on United. Not even enough for one flight.

Flight Options Try 2 - Round Trip to Dublin

We can fly round trip to Dublin on United. Depart Sunday, August 25, return Monday, September 9. Non-stop, $1,076.

Just searching for the cheapest flight, we can leave Chicago at Sunday August 25, return Wednesday September 11. Round trip to Dublin, $653 on American. However, we have long layovers in Madrid on the way there and NYC on the way home. Two places I'd like to see, but not sure we can do it in a layover.

American again, round trip to/from Dublin, leave Chicago on Monday August 26, return Wednesday September 11, $845. Non-stop to Dublin, same layover in NYC on the way home.

Aer Lingus has the same prices to/from Dublin as United.

Did a random Kayak search for round trip to/from London for 8/26-9/10. The United flight(s) are the cheapest. Well, if we leave on Sunday and are willing to have 2 connections both ways, we can do it for $800. Hardly seems worth it to me.

Ferry and Rail

You can ferry to/from Dublin to/from Holly Head or Liverpool. The ferry to Holly Head is 3 hours. Liverpool appears to be significantly farther, I'm not sure exactly how far at this time, but is located near Chester, which I think was a potential destination. You can train from either Liverpool or Chester to London. It's like 4-5 hours.

Can get a rail pass for Ireland/England for $500 each, good for 5 travel days. Seems kind of pricey. I'd have to compare to individual train trips once we identify our itinerary.

Flight Option Try 1 - Round Trip to London

Potential flight option, plus some notes. This will probably bore you to read, but I'm trying to figure out all of the logistics so we can put together the best potential itinerary.

Leave Chicago on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 4 pm. Arrive London Heathrow at 5:55 AM. Return London to  Chicago Tuesday, September 10, 2013. There is an 8 AM and a Noon flight. Round trip is $1,021 on United. That seems to be the cheapest fair. So, doesn't help to leave a day before, day after, etc.

We can fly WOW Air from London to Reykjavik for $120. One-way. However, that airline leave from London Gatwick, not London Heathrow.

One-way from London to Reykjavik on Iceland Air is $222. That seems pretty standard, no matter the day. Iceland Air flies out of Heathrow.

You can then fly from Reykjavik to Dublin on Iceland Air or SAS for about $300. Although, it's not direct. Which sucks.

London to Dublin or vice versa appears to be pretty cheap. There is a discount air carrier called Ryan Air that flies from Dublin's one main airport into London's lesser airports.

Total cost for something like this is $1,600 each. I'm not so sure this is the best option.

Thorsmork

I'm slightly obsessed with this place (starts at about the 30 second mark).

Reykjavík Excursions

Some things we can do in Reykjavik. First, learn to pronounce Reykjavik.

Iceland Video

A little something to get us excited about Iceland, courtesy of Mr. Josh DeRosa. He thinks Iceland would be a cool trip. I asked him what we should do, he said "go see this shit". Well said.

Go For Launch!

Shannon asked for. Shannon got it. Time for a new blog? Oh yes.

Will anyone read our blog? Probably not. Will we keep it anyway? You bet!

It's time for a vacation and we don't do simple vacations. We do international vacations with lots of logistics, planning, and hopefully, fun. Eric usually tackles the first two (nerd), Shannon usually tackles the third. Will it be the same this time around? Let's find out!

Euro 2013 is officially a GO!!!!!
