We were enjoying a beer and tapa (bruschetta) when a guy asked us, in Spanish, if we spoke English. We said yes. He offered to by us a shot. I was a little skeptical at first, didn't know if there was a potential threat of any kind. We talked to him a little more and there was no threat. He just moved to Madrid from the States and didn't know anyone. His name was Ashok, I think. We agreed to the shot.
While he was ordering the shots, he made friends with a Spanish couple from Barcelona - Monica and I can't think if the guys name. Soon, all 5 of us were at a table drinking beers and doing shots.
The Spanish couple were really nice. They gave us tips on Barcelona and helped us with our Spanish. They were in town for the weekend.
Ashok was a bit of a mess, but seemed like a good guy. Clearly outgoing and friendly, real easy to talk to. He is going to business school in Madrid. His father is a big shot at B of A and he has lived all over the world, the last several in San Francisco.
During one of his trips to the bar to buy shots from Eduardo - the bartender - Ashok made friends with a British couple - Viv and Tom - who just flew in for the weekend. I didn't get to speak to them much.
Soon it was nearly 3 and we were out of cash so we called it a night. Pretty sure 3 am is early by Madrid standards.
Great night all around. Random adventure we'll always talk about. Part of what vacation is all about.
