| I'm going to start adding photos to spice these up. This is Lisbon |
Get to Philly at 4:45 PM. Leave for Lisbon at 8:35 PM. Get into Lisbon, Wed. Oct. 16 at 8:40 AM.
On Friday Oct. 18, we take the train to Madrid, arrive at 8:10 AM on Sat. Oct. 19.
Stay there until Wed. Oct. 23, take the train to Seville.
On Friday, Oct. 25 we take the train to Valencia.
On Sat. Oct. 26 we take the train to Barcelona.
Fly home Tuesday Oct. 29. Leave Barcelona at 9:45 AM, get into Philly at 1:45 PM. Leave for Chicago at 4 PM, home at 5:21 PM.
So, we cut down our layover in Philly on the way home. The flight home from Barcelona is like $7 more expensive than the one from Madrid. The train from Lisbon to Madrid is cheaper than the flight from Lisbon to Seville.
So, total cost is $1,453. Travel time is 44 hours, 8 of those are overnight (and offset one hotel room).
So, a little cheaper than Option 3. It still feels a little rushed to me, but I'm not sure we're any better or worse than we were with other options.
I still need to look at schedule/cost for using your United miles from Chicago as well as flip this option around - into Barcelona, out of Lisbon.

For $942 per person we can fly US Airways Chicago to Lisbon, Barcelona to Chicago. We basically get the same flight times I had flying United to Philly, and it's only $7 more expensive. Saves a little hassles I guess with changing airlines and baggage and stuff?
ReplyDeleteUnited wants $1,933 for that same itinerary. So, fuck you, United.
DeleteEven if we could in theory use your miles for one of those tickets, the other ticket would still be more expensive than two tickets on US Air.
We can leave Saturday, October 12 and return Sunday, October 27, into Lisbon, out of Barcelona for $1,012. That's about $50 more than flying home on a weekday. It's surprisingly the same cost to fly out on Saturday as on a weekday.
ReplyDeleteGives us one extra day in Spain, still 10 days off work.
It's $997 to do Philly-Lisbon, Barcelona-Philly on these dates, use your miles for United.
DeleteIt's $1,170 to do Chicago-Barcelona; Lisbon-Chicago on these dates.
DeleteIt's $1,010 to do Chicago-Lisbon; Madrid-Chicago on these dates, so probably not worth it to go from Barcelona back to Madrid.
DeleteI tried bumping our departure back a week, leave Friday Oct. 18 (so we can see John Oliver). The flight is at 4:15 out of O'Hare, not sure if you could pull that off without taking a day off of work.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, leave 10/18, return Sun. 11/3, total cost is $1,042. So, another $30 over the last option. All that extra cost is on the Barcelona to Chicago leg, not sure why.
It's $1,171 to do Philly-Lisbon, Barcelona-Philly on these dates. Weird.
DeleteIt's $1,453 to do Chicago-Barcelona; Lisbon-Chicago on these dates. And you have to leave at 11:45 on Friday. And make 2 connections on the way home.
Delete$1,010 to do Chicago-Lisbon; Madrid-Chicago on these dates. So, a little cheaper than flying home from Barcelona, but maybe not enough to offset the train trip from Barcelona-Madrid.
