It's been over a year since our amazing Budapest-Vienna-Prague vacation, so we decided to go for another one. It will be hard to duplicate the last trip, but we're more than willing to try. We debated a few locations, starting with Iceland and the UK, but changed our minds and are planning on Spain in October 2013.

Madrid to Lisbon
10 hour train ride from Madrid to Lisbon, but doable. Overnight and that's about all I can decipher right now. Timetable below.
For your information, US Airways has direct flights from Philly to Lisbon and from Barcelona to Philly. $978/person. This assumes you could get us to Philly with your miles.
Just something to think about. I don't know if it would be faster than additional train fares from Madrid to Lisbon and back or Barcelona to Madrid, etc.
If it's the same airfare as a nonstop direct, it's worth investigating if you ask me. I did find that PHL-MAD and MAD-PHL has a direct option everyday. The direct connection between PHL-LIS and LIS-PHL is more limited. For example, you can get from PHL to LIS direct on the 15th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, and 25th. From LIS to PHL direct the options are 16th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, 25th, and 26th. Having that said, maybe we fly into Lisbon and out of Madrid with a train between Lisbon and Madrid. Initial thought. Getting to PHL is no problem from ORD using my miles. 40K roundtrip for the both of us.
I just posted info about train passes. I know we'd prefer to travel by train, but we should look at total travel costs, not separate plane from train, cause we may pay more to end up taking the train back to Madrid to catch our flight home.
Ideally, it would be nice to fly into Lisbon, then go straight to the Costa Del Sol, but I suppose if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. I think you can fly Lisbon to Seville. To take the train, you have to go back to Madrid.
It would also be nice to take a train from Costa Del Sol to Barcelona, all along the Mediterranean cost, but I don't think such a train exists. You have to go back into Madrid.
My thought is we want to be in Madrid or Barcelona at the mid point of our trip, try to rent an apartment with laundry.
